THE WILDEN ROUTES

Due to ongoing construction activity in the future Hidden Hills and Village Centre neighbourhoods, the only access to the Wilden backcountry is the newly improved access trail off Union Road (Zig-Zaggy Trail). Therefore, the Wild One routes can’t be perfect loops this year and will incorporate a bit of backtracking.

1 K

Start and finish are at the trailhead of the Zig-Zaggy Trail, on Union Road, 50 metres south of the Begbie Road turnoff. You can park at the trailhead on Union Road’s west side. There will be signs with all the information you need to know. For the 1 km Kid’s Run, follow the dark blue arrows.

The course shares the same route as the 5 and 10 km runs, following the Zig-Zaggy Trail up the hill. After almost 100 m, cross the wider trail and continue straight on. 50 m after the second switchback turn around and sprint the same trail back down to the finish line.

5 K

The 5 K run measures 5.14 km.

Start and finish are at the trailhead of the Zig-Zaggy Trail, on Union Road, 50 metres south of the Begbie Road turnoff. You can park at the trailhead on Union Road’s west side. There will be signs with all the information you need to know. For the 5 km run, follow the blue arrows..

The course shares the same route as the 10 km run for long stretches but takes a few shortcuts and skips the Wilden Ridge.

Follow the Zig-Zaggy Trail up the hill. After 100 m, cross the wider trail and continue straight up on the single trail. After 680 m, the trail meets the wider dirt trail going up the east flank of Wilden Ridge, turn right. Stay on that trail past the 1 km sign, ignoring all possible left turns until you hit the even wider Wilden Ridge gravel trail. Turn left onto this trail and follow it for 225 m. Turn right onto a grassy trail, following a lush valley for 165 m. Turn left following a trail up the flank. After 150 m, you will reach a ridge. Turn left onto a well-pronounced gravel trail. Follow that trail for 270 m, past the 2 km sign. Turn right onto a logging road going down the other side of the ridge’s flank. After 120 m that trail meets a gravel trail, turn right, and follow this trail for 150 m. Turn left onto a grassy trail into the forest. Shortly before the trail ends after 360 m, turn left onto a trail that leads down into a gully and up again onto an open grassy plain. On the right, on a rocky outcrop, lies a giant log – this is your halfway photo spot with a stunning view of Okanagan Lake.

Run in a north-eastern direction on a trail that’s a bit hidden in the grasslands for 260 m past the 3 km sign. When you hit the gravel trail, turn right, and follow it for 480 m, until the trail joins the Wilden Ridge trail, turn left. It’s all downhill from here! Stay on the trail for only 50 m, then turn right onto a dirt trail. Follow this pretty much straight on for 530 m, then the trail switches back and after a very brief climb goes downhill very steep on loose gravel, take care! At the bottom of the trail, turn right onto the wider dirt trail. After only 50 m, turn left onto the Zig-Zaggy Trail you came up on. Sprint down to the finish line

10 K

The 10 K run measures 10.2 km.

Start and finish are at the trailhead of the Zig-Zaggy Trail, on Union Road, 50 metres south of the Begbie Road turnoff. You can park at the trailhead on Union Road’s west side. There will be signs with all the information you need to know. For the 10 km run, follow the orange arrows.

The course shares the same route as the 5 km run for long stretches but takes a few extra loops and climbs to the Wilden Ridge.

Turn right onto a grassy trail, following a lush valley. Stay on this trail for approximately 1.15 km, keeping left at the end of the valley to climb up to a ridge, passing the 2 km sign, and following the ridge. Turn right onto a lesser pronounced trail that winds down the western flank of the ridge until, after 210 m, it meets a gravel trail. Turn right and follow this trail for 660 m, past the 3 km sign, curving left before a pond. Before the trail curves right, turn sharp left onto a trail that’s going over a small ridge and, after 120 m, meets a grassy trail where you turn right. Follow that trail for 200 m. Shortly before the trail ends, turn left onto a trail that leads down into a gully and up again onto an open grassy plain. Turn left heading in a north-eastern direction on a trail that’s a bit hidden in the grasslands for 260 m past the 4 km sign. When you hit the gravel trail that you came on, turn right, and backtrack it for 480 m, until the trail joins the Wilden Ridge gravel trail, where you turn sharp right. Grind up the steep trail to the Wilden Ridge, past the 5 km sign. As soon as the route flattens, there’s your halfway photo spot at the Wilden Fire Cabin.

Keep following the Wilden Ridge Trail going south for 500 m. Turn left onto the Old Ridge Trail which is a bit hidden. After 740 m, having passed the 6 km sign and after a very steep climb, you will hit the Wilden Ridge Trail again. Turn left but after only 10 m turn right onto a single trail going down the western flank of the ridge. After 150 m this path meets another single trail, turn sharp right. Run along this beautiful path for 480 m, passing the 7 km sign, then turn right onto a single trail leading back up to the ridge after 120 m. Turn left onto the Wilden Ridge Trail and start backtracking on it for approx. 1.3 km, passing the Fire Cabin and the 8 km sign – it’s all downhill from there. Take good care going down the steep gravel road! Shortly (50 m) after passing the junction that you came from, turn right onto a dirt trail. Follow this pretty much straight on for 530 m, passing the 9 km sign, then the trail switches back and after a very brief climb goes downhill very steep on loose gravel, take care! At the bottom of the trail, turn right onto the wider dirt trail. After only 50 m, turn left onto the Zig-Zaggy Trail you came up on. Sprint down to the finish line.
